There's Room on Your Plate for Idaho® Potatoes


Idaho® potatoes have always had a place on my plate! 

For more than 30 years, I've been working with people of all ages, trying to help them find new and different ways to live a healthier life and I've always emphasized two things:

  • Commit to a regular fitness regimen and
  • Fuel your body with healthy fruits, vegetables and lean protein.

When the USDA's new MyPlate www.ChooseMyPlate.gov was unveiled, I was thrilled.  It's a simple tool that empowers people and can help them make the right choices when it comes to deciding what to eat.  Plus, it includes potatoes and you know I love my Idaho® potatoes!

Potatoes are one of the most nutritious and versatile foods available. One potato has only 110 calories and is loaded with important nutrients like potassium, vitamin C, fiber and we can't leave out the complex carbohydrates - they provide the energy our bodies need to power our daily lives and fitness work-outs.

Did you also know that potatoes are good for your heart?  The American Heart Association recently certified Idaho® potatoes as a heart-healthy food; they contain no fat or cholesterol.

One of the best things about potatoes is their versatility.  You can eat them for breakfast, lunch or dinner and prepare them a thousand different ways.  The trick is keeping these spuds healthy when you cook them!  Here are a few tips...

  • Top your baked potato with fat-free or low-fat plain yogurt, salsa, cottage cheese, grilled chicken or fresh vegetables - anything and everything goes with potatoes!
  • Use pureed potatoes to thicken stews, soups, and gravies. This adds flavor, nutrients, and texture.

My family and I enjoy Idaho® potatoes several times a week and I hope that the USDA's new MyPlate will inspire Moms like me to make room on their plates for potatoes!
